Cockburn Financial Counselling Service

Financial Counsellors provide free, confidential and independent advice to people who have money and debt problems so that they understand their options and get back on track.

Our Financial Counsellors are qualified professionals; however, they differ from financial planners and advisors in that they do not lend money or advise people on investing.

The City has two Financial Counsellors who can assist individuals across the Perth metropolitan area. They offer the following services:

• Budget assistance – to help manage cash flow sustainably
• Debt negotiation – counsellors work with clients and creditors to negotiate debt more quickly
• Advocacy – counsellors can liaise with other organisations and government offices such as the Australian Tax Office and Centrelink on behalf of the client as well as assisting with consumer protection disputes and superannuation insurance claim assistance
• Referral – counsellors can recommend other services to link clients into
• Community education – provide workshops and education on financial wellbeing such as 'Reducing Financial Stress' and 'Budgeting Basics'
• Microfinance – can check eligibility for the 'No Interest Loan Scheme' and 'Step up'.

Teaching Kids About Money

The City has put together an informative and age-appropriate booklet for parents and caregivers called Teaching Kids About Money. The booklet provides useful information and handy tips on what you can do at home to help your child understand money better. Contact the City on the details below to get a copy of the booklet.
