First Nations Community Development

Provides information, supports culturally appropriate programs and events First Nations community members.

This includes the following:

  • Coordinates the City's Aboriginal Reference Group 
  • Supports culturally appropriate engagement with the First Nations community
  • Assists with information on First Nations cultural awareness training
  • Celebrates the City’s participation in National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week and welcomes schools' involvement
  • Provides information on culturally appropriate support services for residents, including the 'My Time' group for Aboriginal parents and grandparents
  • Provides information on First Nations small businesses and providers of cultural services.

The City has developed free resources which can be provided to schools on request:
  • The Beeliar Boodjar booklet introduces the Whadjuk Nyungar history of the Cockburn area
  • Derbal Nara website Derbal Nara - City of Cockburn covers the history of Aboriginal people and culture in the area known as Derbal Nara (Cockburn Sound)

Aboriginal Cultural and Visitors Centre

The Cultural Centre, to be located in Bibra Lake, will be a place of recognition and learning about Nyungar culture, language, music, art and dance.
