Social Media Guidelines

The City of Cockburn uses social media to communicate useful and relevant information to our residents and community. 
 
The guidelines describe how the City interacts with its audience and the governance around its social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.  

Terms of Use 

While we do encourage open and transparent dialogue, the City of Cockburn will act immediately to protect the integrity and quality of its social media accounts.  
 
The City of Cockburn and its page administrators reserve the right to remove any comment that: 
 
  • Is illegal, encourages illegal activities and/or invites others to commit illegal activities; this includes copyright law 
  • Refers to, encourages, or promotes the use of alcohol or illegal drugs 
  • Contains racist, defamatory, abusive, aggressive, repetitive, obsessive or inappropriate comments. This includes comments which are sexually explicit, contain profanity, or describe graphic or violent events 
  • Acts only to advertise or promote a commercial organisation 
  • Discusses Local Government elections and/or candidates 
  • Made by a user that is consistently negative or aggressive, and viewed to be creating an unsafe space for others to comment 
  • Does not relate to the post (comments) or adds no value to the conversation. 
Accounts may also be restricted or blocked if they:  
  • Violate the Terms of Use 
  • Use images in profile pictures or user backgrounds that are, in our opinion, inappropriate or offensive 
  • Breach the terms of use of their Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter accounts. 
Followers are assumed to be familiar with the terms of use of Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and/or Twitter when tweeting or commenting on the City of Cockburn’s accounts. 

Availability 

We update our social media accounts from Monday to Friday, 6am–9pm. We monitor and respond to comments on Facebook between office hours of 8am–5pm and it may take up to one working day to respond.
 
Our Facebook inbox is monitored by Customer Service from Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm and it may take 24–48 hrs to reply. Our message inbox on Instagram is unmonitored. During an incident or emergency, additional updates and information may be provided outside of these times.

Privacy 

The City of Cockburn respects personal information as required under privacy legislation. We do not collect or use personal information of any kind from followers of our Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts. 
 
Followers are advised to be very careful about what they tweet or post. To protect followers’ privacy and the privacy of others, please do not include things such as telephone numbers, email addresses or other personal identifiers in tweets or posts. Also, followers are expected to respect the personal privacy of others. However, we cannot guarantee that all followers will comply. Where requested, the City of Cockburn will remove personal information tweeted or posted by followers. 

Replies and direct messages 

The City welcomes comments, opinions and feedback for our followers and endeavour to join the conversation where possible. However, we reserve the right to not reply individually to tweets, messages, or comments we receive.

The City of Cockburn is not directly affiliated with any advertisement or post that may appear on our page unless we state otherwise or unless it comes directly from the City of Cockburn. We neither endorse nor sponsor the adverts that may appear while viewing our page.

All content or materials made available on the City of Cockburn’s social media accounts is for informational purposes only. While the City takes all reasonable steps to ensure that content or materials provided by the City is accurate, it does not and is unable to check the accuracy of content or materials provided or made available (including through links) by followers or other third parties.
