Nyungar Wardan Katitjin Bidi – The People’s Ocean Knowledge Trail

Kaya… Welcome!

Come walk with us along the Wardan Gepa Boodjaralup, the sea shore of Cockburn Sound. This is the Nyungar Wardan Katitjin Bidi, the People’s Ocean Knowledge Trail.

You’re invited to follow a katitjin bidi, a trail of knowledge that explores boodjar (country), moort (family) and katitjin (stories). These are the foundations of Nyungar life and identity.

In Nyungar cosmology, the Waarkal (Rainbow Serpent) is the Creator and guardian of the fresh water sources.

He gifted us life and a deep belief in three interconnected realms:

  • Boodjar (country) - the land that nurtures and sustains us
  • Moort (family) - our kin, community and belonging
  • Katitjin (stories) - the knowledge passed through generations.

These three form the foundation of Nyungar life.

Woven together, they create the “web of life” – a living system that guides how we care for each other, honour our Ancestors, and stay connected to Country.
