The City takes a strategic approach to sustainability, guided by an integrated reporting platform for sustainability. The City has a sustainability policy and strategy and produces an annual State of Sustainability Report based around a regularly updated action plan.
The City of Cockburn defines sustainability as:
"Pursuing governance excellence to meet the needs of current and future generations through an integration of environmental protection, social advancement and economic prosperity."
Integrated reporting platform for sustainability
The City of Cockburn takes a strategic approach to sustainability and measures its progress through an integrated reporting framework.
The Sustainability Policy is the City’s guiding document for sustainability. It outlines the City's overarching approach to sustainability across 11 principles including:

- Sustainable procurement
- Responsible waste management
- Environmentally sustainable design
- Climate Change Action
- Sustainable City Growth
- Social Equity and Inclusion
- Community Health and Wellbeing
- Economic Advancement

The Sustainability Strategy 2017 - 2022 sets the City’s key objectives for sustainability, as well as outlining how the City will implement them.
Sustainability Action Plan
The Sustainability Action plan defines the key actions that staff across the City will take to achieve the objectives outlined in the Strategy.
State of Sustainability Report
The State of Sustainability (SoS) Report publicly tracks the City’s progress towards sustainability across four key areas Governance, Economy, Environment and Society.
