Meet the GREAT Gang

Gabby the Gifter

Gabby loves giving items a second life. Instead of throwing things away, she donates them to op shops or swaps them with friends.

Watch Gabby’s video to see how easy it is to gift and give.

You can follow Gabby’s lead by joining local clothes swaps and sustainability events, or by visiting the Reuse Shop at the Henderson Waste Recovery Park to donate or buy pre-loved items.

Ray the Recycler

Ray is all about recycling right. He sorts his waste carefully to make sure everything ends up where it belongs.

Watch Ray’s video to learn how to recycle better at home.

Most Cockburn properties have three bins: general waste, recycling and green organics. You can also return drink containers through Containers for Change for a 10 cent refund and drop off larger items at the Henderson Waste Recovery Park for recycling or resale.

Emilio the Earthcycler

Emilio knows that nature doesn’t waste a thing. He turns food scraps and garden waste into compost to feed his garden.

Watch Emilio’s video to learn how easy earth-cycling can be.

Green bin waste is turned into mulch that residents can collect for free at the Henderson Waste Recovery Park. You can also claim subsidies on worm farms, compost bins and bokashi systems through the City.

Agnes the Avoider

Agnes believes the best waste is the waste you never create. She chooses reusable options and avoids single-use plastics wherever possible.

Watch Agnes’s video to see how she avoids waste in daily life.

The City supports residents to avoid waste through free eco audits, workshops on sustainable living, and rebates on cloth nappies and reusable sanitary products.

Trent the Taker

Trent makes sure tricky items end up in the right place. From batteries to light globes, he knows exactly where to take them.

Watch Trent’s video to see where tricky waste belongs.

Cockburn has a range of drop-off options for hazardous and unusual waste items, including aerosols, batteries, globes and printer cartridges.

Why we should reduce waste

Every year, the amount of waste produced in Australia grows by about one per cent. With limited landfill space and rising disposal costs, reducing what we throw away saves money, conserves resources and protects the environment.

When we reduce, reuse and recycle, we also lower greenhouse gas emissions and help build a cleaner, healthier community.

How we can reduce waste

The best way to reduce waste is to avoid creating it in the first place by buying less, choosing reusable options and avoiding heavily packaged products.

When waste can’t be avoided, the next best step is to reuse or recycle it.

  • Paper, cardboard, glass, metal cans and hard plastics can all go in your recycling bin
  • Food scraps and garden waste can be composted or added to your green bin
  • Many household items can be sold, donated or repurposed instead of thrown away.

Even when items can’t be recycled, they can still be used to create energy through waste-to-energy technology. Every bit of effort helps Cockburn move closer to a zero-waste future.
