Understand how the City’s two-bin and three-bin systems work, what goes in each bin, and which items must never be placed in kerbside bins.
Two-bin system
Properties under 400 square metres, rural properties and most multi-residential properties generally have the two-bin system. These households have a recycling bin and a general waste bin.
The general waste bin previously had a dark green lid. The City is progressively replacing these lids with red lids to meet Australian Standards.
Find out what goes in each bin below.
Recycling bin (yellow lid)You can place:
- All hard plastic bottles, tubs and containers
- Glass bottles and jars
- Steel and aluminium cans
- Paper, cardboard, newspapers and magazines (not shredded)
- Clean foil scrunched into a firm ball.
Remember to rinse containers, remove lids and place items loose in the bin.
General waste bin (dark green or red lid)You can place:
- Non-recyclable general waste
- Food scraps
- Pet waste
- Nappies
- Shredded paper
- Hygiene and sanitary products
- Soiled paper products such as paper towels and tissues
- Clothing that cannot be donated
- Soft plastics
- Garden waste if you do not have a garden organics bin.
Three-bin system
The three-bin system has been rolled out to most residential properties over 400 square metres. It includes a separate garden organics bin in addition to the recycling and general waste bins.
Residents on smaller properties can apply to opt in to the three-bin system at no cost. If approved, the general waste bin is changed from 240 litres to 140 litres and a garden organics bin is added.
Find out what goes in each bin below.
