In 2014/15 the City received a proposal from the Cockburn BMX Club to upgrade the facilities at Malabar Park to an ‘international’ standard. This proposal included concept designs for a new track, clubroom building, start ramp, gym area, offices and lighting.
Given the points listed below, the City proposed in its Draft 15 Year Community Sport and Recreation Facilities Plan that the site be redeveloped.
  • The club’s commitment to develop a formal proposal
  • the condition of the infrastructure on site
  • the fact that BMX is an emerging sport, now listed as an Olympic sport
  • the popularity with the City’s pump tracks,
  • The City is in the process of developing concept plans and a cost estimate for the redevelopment of the site, however the vision identified to date includes:
  • Assessing the compliance of the track to current industry standards and determining if adjustments are to be made or a new track is required
  • A new start ramp for training and racing
  • Rationalising the infrastructure on site and constructing a new multi-purpose community sporting facility
  • Formalising car parking
  • Creating a space for the wider community that includes a pump track and park area.
The development of concept plans will be used to submit a funding application to the state government. Following the outcome of the funding application, the project budget will be confirmed with a view to commence construction in 2019/20 through to 2020/21.
Anticipating a positive outcome for the funding application, in 2018/19 the City has $300,000 to develop detailed designs and relevant documentation for construction of the future redevelopment.
