Fishing (General)

Fishing locations

Fishing along the coast of Western Australia is superb and the City of Cockburn has a number of outstanding fishing spots that are easy to access and guaranteed to whet the appetite of the keenest anglers. These include locations suitable for all abilities:

  • Port Coogee Accessible Fishing Jetty, at the end of Chelydra Point, North Coogee
  • Ammunition Jetty, Nyyerbup Circle, Coogee.

Other popular fishing spots are listed below. Fishers should exercise caution in these coastal locations where weather and sea conditions could be hazardous.

  • Catherine Point Groyne – C Y O’Connor Beach
  • Port Coogee Marina External Breakwaters (excluding the Coogee Maritime Trail)
  • Breakwaters and groynes around Woodman Point and the Woodman Point Boat Ramp.

Prior to selecting a spot to cast from it is important that you consider the safety of yourself and other recreational users of the beach.

Please also consider the environment when fishing. Put all your waste in the bin or take it home with you. Fishing line, hooks, bait bags and balloons are harmful to local wildlife including seabirds, turtles and dolphins.

Prohibited fishing locations

Fishing is not permitted within the Port Coogee waterways, Coogee Maritime Trail or Shark Barrier at Coogee Beach.

Spearfishing and fishing for sharks is prohibited in Cockburn waterways and beaches.

Fines will apply if people are caught fishing in prohibited areas, spearfishing or fishing for sharks.

Reel It In bins

Reel It In bins can be found at popular locations in Cockburn Sound and are a safe and easy way to dispose of fishing line and tackle. These bins have been installed as part of the Reel It In campaign by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) in partnership with Recfishwest, Native Animal Rescue, Keep Australia Beautiful Clean Marine and the Wildcare Helpline program to help reduce the impact of discarded fishing line and tackle on wildlife.

Discarded fishing line can have significant impacts on our wildlife, as it doesn't break down in the environment and can tangle our wildlife. Please help protect our natural environment and dispose of your fishing waste correctly.

Fishing closures

Cockburn’s pristine coastline is perfect for fishing, but it is important that we clean up after ourselves so that everyone can enjoy our beaches.
