Swimming enclosure

About the Swimming Enclosure at Coogee Beach

The City of Cockburn installed Australia's first swimming enclosure at Coogee Beach, allowing people to enjoy a safe swimming environment all year round as it remains in place throughout the entire year. The physical barrier is safe for marine animals and the environment. The area has become a popular and safe swimming destination for people from around Perth.

The swimming enclosure has been in place at Coogee Beach since 2013. The area within the enclosure is approximately 300 metres long and 75 metres wide and it extends from sea bed to surface to create a safe swimming beach. The swimming enclosure is a strong physical barrier made from a sturdy, flexible nylon with steel cables that is expected to last at least 10 years. The enclosure does not harm marine life, but provides a unique marine habitat whilst it is in place. The City has entered into a five year lease agreement with Ultimate Limestone.

The enclosure at Coogee Beach has proven to be a very popular destination for swimmers from all around Perth. It attracts schools and other swimming groups. In the summer months, one of the City’s three pontoons can be found within the enclosure.

Is the enclosure maintained?

Holes or damage to the City’s swimming enclosure occur from time to time, particularly during winter storms and weather patterns, and maintenance is an ongoing process. This is to be expected for a flexible structure in a harsh, dynamic marine environment. Large marine life may be able to enter the enclosure during these times of maintenance and repair so please look out for signage on site that may indicate when this is underway.

Enclosure damage is either identified by Ultimate Limestone through routine inspections, or otherwise reported to the City by swimmers using the enclosure. Either way, minor damage is rectified as promptly as practical, or signage is displayed to notify swimmers that the enclosure is under repair until it is fixed if it can’t be repaired immediately. Inspections are undertaken by Ultimate Limestone periodically as appropriate to weather conditions.
