What made the news in Cockburn – 28 August-4 September 2026

Friday 4 September:
Six almost-completed homes in Hilton have sat empty for years while another six partially built townhouses in nearby Hamilton Hill were demolished this week, prompting Greens MLC Brad Pettitt to accuse the Cook government of failing to finish housing projects.
The Hamilton Hill demolition follows the collapse of Inspired Homes in April 2025 and the subsequent discovery of construction problems that led to DevelopmentWA deciding they should be demolished and rebuilt.

Thursday 3 September:
A string of crashes have unfolded in wet weather early this morning including a motorbike that collided with a car south of Perth, including at South Lake.
A man in his 50s was on a Black Honda motorbike on North Lake Road in South Lake when he collided with a Grey Holden Commodore sedan near Elderberry Drive at about 5.45am.

Wednesday 2 September:
Cockburn is among Perth’s best performing suburbs in a list showing the biggest property gains of the past year, according to new data from Cotality.

The Cockburn Wetlands Education Centre is among 39 community-driven projects across WA which will be supported by $7m in State government funding to protect and restore the State's diverse and valuable natural assets.
TWCC will receive $283,900 to restore and connect wetlands and drylands in the northeast corner of Bibra Lake Reserve, by revegetating degraded areas creating nesting habitats.

Tuesday 1 September:
A Cockburn company is among three to receive funding across five battery manufacturing projects through Round 1 of the $50 million Local Battery Manufacturing Program.
Magellan Powertronics Pty Ltd of Bibra Lake has secured funding.

Monday 31 August:
Dead trees may serve a greater post-mortem purpose for wildlife than people realise.
The City of Cockburn has launched new signage to let people know some trees that are technically dead or declining can still serve as valuable habitat and food for several animals.

Cockburn ARC took home three awards at the LIWA Aquatics 2026 WA Aquatic & Recreation Industry Awards.
