Spearwood Commonwealth Bank closure

The City's response to PerthNow about the Commonwealth Bank of Australia's closure of its Spearwood branch, 16.7.26

City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett has written to the Commonwealth Bank expressing Council’s deep concern on the closure of the bank and the likely impact it will have on local residents and business owners.
 
Mayor Howlett said he continued to be approached by the customers of the Commonwealth Bank branch in Spearwood and the children of older residents to express their concerns about the proposed closure and the impact it will have on them, particularly those who live in close proximity to the bank.
 
“Many of the local businesses at Stargate Shopping Centre and at nearby Phoenix Shopping Centre in Spearwood have stated they will be also significantly disadvantaged if the closure goes ahead,” Mayor Howlett said.
 
“As outlined by residents and business owners, their options for banking continue to diminish with the closure of all banks that once operated at Phoenix Shopping Centre (the last being in late 2025) and now the proposed closure of the Stargate Shopping Centre bank.”
 
He said of equal concern was that, as Henderson and the Australian Marine Complex was about to undergo major business growth, there was a need for a business bank within the locality.
 
“The Council’s view is that the bank should stay open. Common sense should prevail given the billions of dollars profit being announced each year by the big four banks,” Mayor Howlett said.
 
“However, they fail to understand their grassroots customers, many of whom have been customers for decades who continue to be forced into a corner, based on the concept of ‘progress’.”
 
Mayor Howlett has not yet heard from Commonwealth Bank representatives in response to his request for a meeting.
