Attacks on turtles at Bibra Lake

The City of Cockburn's responses to the Cockburn Gazette on 13.10.2020, about attacks on turtles at Bibra lake - 

Question: When were the turtles found? Were they all found nearby each other, or were they spread out?

Answer: So far as the City is aware for the 2020 nesting season, 5 turtles have been died as a result of what is believed to be a dog attack (at Bibra Lake), one to a raven attack and now two to vehicle strike; we lost another at Manning Lake at about 4.30pm on 12 October, with the carcass taken to Native ARC Inc to see if any eggs could be salvaged.

Question: Is the City investigating the suspected dog attack? What evidence is there which led to that belief?
Answer: In response to an investigation by the City’s Environment team, Native ARC Inc vets who assessed the dead turtles were relatively confident the injuries were caused by a dog attack rather than a fox.
The City’s feral animal control contractor also believes the injuries sustained by the turtles are consistent with a dog attack rather than a fox.

Question: When were the turtles found? Were they all found nearby each other, or were they spread out?
Answer: The turtles where found along the western edge of Bibra Lake adjacent to the Regional Playground.

Question: Given the turtles are suspected to have been killed by a dog, what would your advice to pet owners in the area be?
Answer: Please keep your dog on a lead at all times unless in areas designated as off lead areas.

Answer: All measures currently being undertaken are identified in the report that was presented to Council on Thursday, 10 October. 45 eggs were able to be recovered from the turtles that were attacked last week, and these have been placed in holes and covered with soil in strategic areas around Bibra Lake.
