About the event
Join local artist Susan Flavell for a hands-on workshop where you’ll create your own mask for protests or Halloween using recycled materials. This easy and fun process is suitable for all ages — children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
Masks will be made from recycled cardboard and decorated with tissue paper, and you’re welcome to bring your own feathers or paper to personalise your design.
Susan Flavell is committed to working with recycled materials and avoiding adding to the “stuff” of the world. Her practice is deeply connected to activism and the environment — she coordinated the creation of the striking white elephant for the Roe 8 protest, and her work is featured in the Passion & Protest exhibition running alongside this workshop.
About the Passion and Protest Exhibition
Created especially for the 2025 State History Conference, the exhibition Passion and Protest: Cockburn Community Speaks Up! explores the powerful stories of activism and advocacy that have shaped the City of Cockburn — from Nyungar resistance to colonisation, to community campaigns for transport, food justice, and environmental protection.
The exhibition highlights how Cockburn’s diverse landscapes, coastal, wetland, and bushland, have inspired generations of residents to speak up for their communities. Learn more on the City of Cockburn's History website here.
