5 Steps to Getting Started

Starting a business is an exciting journey, and the City’s Business and Economic Development team are here to support you with training, advice and funding. Your business journey can feel overwhelming, with so many things to do, consider and learn. We hope that the following steps outline how to get your business off the ground in Cockburn.
Step 1: Research and plan to get your business started
Getting started in business is different for everyone. Some business owners tell us they started almost accidentally, receiving orders from friends that suddenly grew. Others meticulously plan their operation before launching, diligently researching and developing a business plan. There is no one ‘right way’ to begin your business journey, but the important thing is that you have a clear idea about the problem you solve,  who you solve it for and how to reach them. This is the fundamentals of starting a business and will build strong foundations for your future venture.

The City  provides a suite of workshops to support your start-up journey. We connect you to the resources, support, advisory services, workshops, and networking opportunities that help you succeed.

Step 2: Find the perfect location for your business
Will you start your business from home? Or are you looking for a local co-working space? Maybe you want to rent your own premises?
Whatever your situation, finding the right location is vital to your business's success.

There are regulations that apply to running a home based business, so be sure to comply with these before commencing trade. Due to land-use zoning, not all areas may be suitable, so research thoroughly and don’t forget to consult our building, planning and health teams in a free pre-lodgement meeting before settling on a site.

Step 3: Understand the approvals, licenses, and permits you may need
Depending on your business type and location, you may need specific approvals, licences, or permits. The City provides an overview that outlines the different types of permits and approvals you may need. Our information can guide you through the unique requirements for your business and is supported by the City’s pre-lodgement meetings to help you get it right first time.

Step 4: Lodge your application(s)

We're here to assist you throughout the application process for any necessary approvals, permits, or licences you may need. Our online lodgement service simplifies both lodging and tracking your applications.

Do you know we offer free pre-lodgement meetings?

Pre-lodgement meetings are a quick and easy way to find out whether you need to submit a Planning Application, apply for a Building or Occupancy Permit or whether you need Environmental Health approvals. Pre-lodgement meetings can help save you time in the application phase, so you get it right from the start.
