Important note: 2025/2026 Applications for SmartRates are now closed. Application re-open from 1 July in each finncial year.
SmartRates lets you pay your rates in smaller, regular amounts by Direct Debit. You can choose to pay weekly, fortnightly or monthly (four weekly). This helps spread the cost across the year and takes away the worry of larger lump sum payments.
If you keep to your SmartRates schedule, you will not be charged interest or penalties.
How SmartRates works
- Payments are made automatically by Direct Debit from your nominated bank account.
- You can choose the frequency that suits you best:
- Weekly (43 payments)
- Fortnightly (22 payments)
- Monthly - 4 Weekly (11 payments)
- Payments commence from the annual due date and end by mid of June in each financial year. Refer to your Annual Rate Notice.
- Application must be received at least 2 days before annual due date shown on your rate notice.
Note: The number of payments is based on how many weeks there are between your annual rates due date and mid-June each financial year. Because this period does not line up neatly with full weeks, fortnights, or months, the total number of payments can look unusual.
Benefits of SmartRates
- Smaller, more manageable payments
- No late fees or penalties if payments are made on time
- Automatic payments mean you do not have to remember due dates
