What made the news in Cockburn – 14-21 August 2026

AUGUST
2026
Friday 21 August:
Kwinana Freeway has been shut as emergency services rush to the scene of a serious vehicle rollover. The crash has resulted in the closure of northbound lanes at Beeliar Drive, Success, with Main Roads WA warning traffic is expected to be heavy in the area into the evening.
South Lake residents hoping to see their beloved Berrigan Lake jetty restored have been dealt another blow, with the City of Cockburn confirming there are currently no plans to replace the structure.
The jetty was removed last month after an assessment found it had substantially deteriorated following prolonged exposure to seasonal flooding. The City said the decision was made on public safety grounds, with the risk considered serious enough that the jetty had to be removed without community consultation.

Thursday 20 August:
Professor Colleen Hayward, Fremantle’s outgoing board member, has shared the story of her journey with the Club as part of this year’s AFLW Indigenous jumper design.
The jumper will be worn in the Club’s Round 3 clash with Carlton, with an alternative away version to be worn in Round 4 against the Tigers.
Wednesday 19 August:
A powerful aura of peace and calm exudes from celebrated Nyungar artist Sharyn Egan.
As she ambles across Dixon Reserve in Hamilton Hill with a gaggle of little dogs in tow, basking in the treat of a sunny winter’s day, the artist reflects on her 69 years, 33 spent living in Cockburn.
Sharyn is out 21st inductee in the Quintessentially Cockburn series featuring the inspiring and varied characters who make-up our eclectic and diverse community.
Sunday 16 August:
Fremantle’s AFLW debut at Cockburn ARC Oval drew more than 2,500 fans and showcased the City of Cockburn’s growing reputation as a premier sporting destination, despite the Dockers’ 21-point loss to Port Adelaide.
Wildlife groups are urging motorists to slow down on Hope Road in the Beeliar Wetlands, as dozens of endangered southwestern snake-necked turtles are killed each year by vehicles and invasive foxes.
Development of a temporary traffic management plan to help protect Bibra Lake’s vulnerable nesting Southwestern Snake-Necked Turtle from road mortality has earned Cockburn Council endorsement.
A trial to reduce speed limits on Hope Road, Progress Drive and Bibra Drive by 10km/hr during the 2027 nesting season will now be developed, along with a cost estimate.
