Removal of Berrigan Lake jetty due to public safety concerns

The City's response to the Fremantle Herald about the removal of Berrigan Lake jetty due to public safety concerns, 13.8.26

Question: Why was the jetty removed?
Answer:
The jetty was removed to guarantee public safety. Following an assessment, it was decided the jetty should be removed as the structure had suffered substantial deterioration as a result of prolonged exposure to seasonal flooding. This created an increasing risk to public safety which the City needed to address.

Question. Was there any community consultation about the removal? If so, what was the response? If not, why not? No?
Answer:
Due to the public safety risk of leaving the jetty in situ, there was no community consultation as the removal needed to take place as soon as possible.
Since the structure’s removal, the City has liaised with local resident association Connecting South Lake to help them understand the reasons for removal.

Question: Will the jetty be replaced? Why or why not?
Answer:
After careful assessment of the structure’s condition, ongoing environmental factors, consideration of recurring seasonal flooding on the jetty’s future structural integrity, along with public safety concerns, it is proposed not to replace the jetty.

Question: Are the council aware of the significance the jetty holds for the community of South Lake? Have you heard any correspondence from community members on this issue?
Answer:
The City is aware of the jetty’s significance as a community asset and has scheduled a meeting with the Connecting South Lake Community Group for Monday 17 August 2026 to discuss the City’s current approach and hear their concerns.
