What made the news in Cockburn – 24 June-3 July 2026
Listen
3
JULY
2026
Friday 3 July:
The government is being called into question over their handling of bird flu after a dead petrel was left at Coogee Beach by authorities.
Thursday 2 July:
Cockburn is thought to be among Perth local government areas expected to be the most impacted by proposed major reforms to WA’s residential design codes.
The changes would mean an additional 50,000 homeowners could subdivide their land and sell their backyards, or demolish and redevelop, helping to boost block values and increase density.
Betts Gateway at Cockburn Gateway Shopping City is among several national Betts footwear outlets to close down after the chain was plunged into administration.
The South Fremantle Power Station remains perched on the edge of Port Coogee. The glory days are long gone. Decades of neglect and disrepair are impossible to miss. Though if you squint to look beyond the graffiti-stained disorder, there’s still something special. The question though: is it worth saving? Stump up the cash. Or bring in the bulldozers? It’s time to make a call.
Wednesday 1 July:
Cockburn Council has adopted a responsible 2026-27 Budget to maintain and improve essential services and facilities, in a challenging economy where costs have escalated significantly for the whole community.
At the City of Cockburn’s Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 30 June, Council adopted the 2026-27 Annual Budget, 2026-27 Differential Rates, and 2026-27 Schedule of Fees and Charges.

Agenda
.
Please note that due to Council decisions, some items that appear in the Agenda may not have been carried as recommended. Updated decisions will be detailed in the Minutes on the City’s

once published in about 10 working days.

There is now more time to access the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure service centre in Success following the beginning of extended office hours.
The Success Service Centre is now open 7.15am until 5.00pm weekdays, offering customers the flexibility and convenience to visit a centre before or after school or work.
Coogee’s $10 million golf course will not progress after two decades of planning due to concerns about the project’s financial viability.
Read about the decision (item 14.4.2) on page 318 of the 9 June Ordinary Council Meeting
Minutes
.
Monday 29 June:
Construction has started on new specialist disability accommodation in Spearwood.
A major emergency is underway south of Perth after a car rolled in a collision. Three people have been injured in the crash, which unfolded about 5.40am at the intersection of Cockburn Road and Mayor Road in Coogee.
Sunday 28 June:
It is official – The Fremantle Docker’s 2026 side now stand alone in WA’s sporting pantheon. The Dockers extended the record-setting run of victories which has rocketed them into premiership favouritism to 14 by toppling Gold Coast by 51 points and took ownership of the longest winning streak in the history of any of the State’s major sporting clubs in the process.
Wednesday 24 June:
Cockburn’s Zero Waste Refill Station – the first opened in WA by a local government – has helped locals join the fight against single-use containers, particularly those made from plastic.
