What made the news in Cockburn – 24-31 July 2026

Thursday 30 July:
The City of Cockburn approved the second highest number of semi-detached, terrace, townhouse and apartment dwellings in WA between May 2025 and April 2026, with 528 approvals, according to data by Apartments.com.au from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

With the majority fo work primarily carried out at the Henderson shipyard, Defence prime BAE Systems has confirmed mast prototyping for the Royal Australian Navy’s new Hunter class frigates has concluded after three years of work.
The Hunter Mast Proof-of-Concept Project build was supported by teams at Adelaide’s Osborne Naval Shipyard and in Melbourne.

Wednesday 29 July: 
The Australian government has selected Leidos Gibbs and Cox Australia to lead the preliminary design for a contingency dry dock, which will be established in Henderson to support future nuclear-powered submarine capability as part of AUKUS. 

Monday 27 July:

Sunday 26 July:
A key election commitment made by WA Premier Roger Cook will come to fruition after all, as a $700 million Kwinana Freeway road widening project is confirmed. With construction set to commence early next year, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti says new lanes will be added to key sections of the freeway including 11 kilometres between Russell Road and Mortimer Road.

Saturday 25 July:
Residents and city councillors have united to fight Commonwealth Bank plans to close a local branch relied on by the senior community.
CBA has confirmed it will close the popular Spearwood CBA branch on July 31, despite appeals requesting the bank reconsider its decision, including one from Cockburn mayor Logan Howlett.
