Beach bins

The City's response to PerthNow about beach bins along the Cockburn coast, 8.5.26

Qyestion: Why were the City provided bins reduced from 40 to 13 near the Omeo Wreck?
Answer:
The bins are not just near the Omeo wreck.
The beach bins originally stretched from the City’s northern border at the C.Y. O’Connor dog beach to south of Ammo (Ammunition) Jetty.
Due to beach buggy access issues and erosion, the bins along the C.Y. O’Connor stretch were removed. Other bins have been removed due to lack of use.
The section (around 3 kms) of beach that the bins now appear on extends from the Omeo Wreck in North Coogee to Ammo Jetty, which is at Woodman Point.

Question: When did this reduction occur?
Answer:
Over the past two summers.

Question: How has this change impacted the quantity of rubbish in the bins?
Answer:
The amount of waste being collected in the bins has been monitored and recorded since the bins were first installed to identify which locations were most effective, the type of waste being disposed of and which bins can be removed (due to lack of use/waste collected).
The amount of waste in the remaining bins continues to be recorded to ensure they are serviced appropriately (considering peak times) and to reduce risk of overflow.
The overall amount of waste collected in the beach bins in 2025-26 increased since 2024-25, likely due to the increase in beachgoers and popularity of major events in this area, including the Coogee Live two-day festival which attracted more than 26,500 people in March.
Outside of these events, there has been an observed reduction in waste collected on a day-to-day basis, likely a result of there being fewer bins available.

Question: How has this change impacted beach litter?
Answer:
There is less litter being observed along the coast, indicating that there are still sufficient bins available for people to do the right thing. The new signage on the bins has reduced dumping of large items (discarded beach shelters) and litter next to the bins.
