Rumour of petition to change name of Coogee

The City of Cockburn's response to 6PR Rumour File about a petition to change the name of Coogee

Question: Apparently there is a petition from local residents to change the name of Coogee as the Aboriginal name is a 'smelly place'. Have you heard anything about this?
Answer:
The City has not received any petitions concerning the meaning of the name Coogee and an application to change it.

Electors of the City of Cockburn may petition the Council to take some form of action over a particular issue. The subject of a petition must be a matter on which Council has the power to act. With respect to naming localities, or suburbs, this is not something that Council has authority to act on.

As per the provisions in the Land Administration Act 1997, the Minister for Lands has the authority for officially naming and un-naming all localities in Western Australia. Through delegated authority, Landgate acts on the Minister’s behalf to undertake the administrative responsibilities required for the formal approval of locality names and boundaries.

Further information about petitions can be found on the City’s website.

It might be useful to refer to the following document about the origin of the name Coogee in both NSW and WA: ANPS (Australian National Placenames Survey) Occasional Paper No 6 ‘On the scent of Coogee? By Jan Tent, 2019: Microsoft Word - OccPaper 6-2.docx (anps.org.au)
