Yangebup pump track open for fun

19JUNE2018
A desire to provide local people of all ages with a fun place to recreate was behind moves by Yangebup Progress Association (YPA) and local residents to establish a bicycle pump track in the suburb.

The new $65,000 track is now open at Perena Rocchi Reserve on the corner of Osprey and Moorhen Drives where the 150m loop includes sections designed for beginner and advanced riders.

As part of his work with Project ReCycle, local resident and YPA supporter Corey Gaidzionis said he’d heard good reports from police officers in Karratha about the success of a pump track in the town.

“I floated the idea with Council around 18 months ago but it was put on the back burner due to a lack of funds,” Mr Gaidzionis said.

“I approached Cockburn MLA Fran Logan about the project and applied for a community funding grant through the Local Projects Local Jobs program.

“Once this was approved, I approached Cockburn Councillor Phil Eva and connected with Council to decide on a location and track design.”

A similar $60,000 project near the Ottey Neighbourhood and Family Centre with the support of Connecting South Lake is still under construction but due for completion by the end of July.

Both projects were made possible with funding from the State Government program.

Pump tracks are commonly made of clay, with a circuit of banked turns and features designed to be ridden by riders "pumping" or creating momentum with up and down body movements.

A similar track established at Dixon Park in Hamilton Hill has proven popular with the community since it opened a year ago.
