Bin Tagging

The bin tagging program helps residents understand how to sort their waste correctly so more materials can be recycled or recovered and less waste ends up in landfill.

What bin tagging involves

The WasteSorted Bin Tagging Program is used across Western Australia to improve kerbside recycling and reduce contamination. The City runs the program periodically to give residents direct, practical feedback about how to use their bins correctly.

On collection day, the waste education team:

  • Checks the contents of yellow, red and green bins
  • Assesses whether waste has been sorted correctly
  • Leaves a tag on each bin showing what was done well and what needs adjustment.

Before the program begins, the team doorknocks in the area to let residents know it is starting and to answer questions.

The goal is education. Bin tagging helps households understand contamination, improve sorting over time and keep valuable materials out of landfill.

Incorrectly sorted bins

If a bin contains significant contamination, the City may tape the bin shut and issue a cannot collect notice. Residents can remove the incorrect items and place the bin out for their next scheduled collection.

Fines and infringements

Under the Waste Local Law, the City can issue fines for severely contaminated bins. This is a last resort.

Before an infringement is issued, residents will have received:

  • Educational bin tags
  • A cannot collect notice
  • Multiple visits and support from the waste education team.

If contamination continues after these steps, a $350 infringement may be issued.
