About the event

Learn how to choose, plant and care for the right tree for your home.

Trees play a vital role in the wellbeing of our community. They provide shade, add value to homes, shelter wildlife and help capture carbon. However, Perth’s urban canopy is declining due to habitat loss and emerging threats such as Polyphagous Shot‑Hole Borer. Now more than ever, planting and supporting trees is essential.

This workshop will help you make informed, sustainable choices when planting trees at home. Many people want to contribute to a greener city but feel unsure about selection or maintenance. We will explore common barriers and offer practical guidance on choosing species that thrive in urban gardens and can be retained through to maturity.

We will discuss:
  • The benefits of trees
  • Perth’s urban canopy decline
  • How to choose the right tree for your garden, including key considerations and recommended species
  • Local stock availability, costs and options
  • Government rebates
  • Planting and establishment methods
  • Basic tree maintenance
  • Weedy and noxious species to avoid.
Join us to learn how you can help grow Perth’s canopy, one well‑chosen, well‑placed tree at a time.
About the WA Tree Festival
Trees are essential to our communities. They provide shelter, food and habitats for countless species, help cool our environment and improve our wellbeing. The WA Tree Festival brings together local governments and community groups across Western Australia to celebrate the vital role trees play in supporting nature and enhancing our neighbourhoods.

In the lead‑up to and throughout the festival, we are hosting events and initiatives focused on greening Cockburn and protecting local wildlife.
