The Port Coogee Waterways are generally clear with lots of different fish species choosing to call this home. As well as enjoying activities on the water, boating and fishing (although not in our waterways) we love to know what’s happening in the waterways and strive to get enjoyment both on and under the water.

Seabin - capturing litter

In January 2019, the City installed WA’s first Seabin at the Port Coogee Marina (northern corner, close to Dome CafĂ©) to capture litter from the local waterways. The Seabin is a floating rubbish bin designed to be installed on floating platforms in marinas, yacht clubs and calm waterways. We have named him Bob due to the motion he makes to collect rubbish from our waterways.

Seabins can catch an estimated 1.5kg of rubbish per day, and some of the items collected in Bob since installation are straws, cigarette butts, a plastic tomato, rope, plastic pieces and many micro and macro plastics that are only 2mm in size. Bob also collects detergents, fuels and oils with a hydrocarbon filter in his catch bag.

Port Coogee Marina - Bin Audit

There are some waste items that cannot go in the Marina bins. Luckily there are a number of easy ways to dispose of these – some can simply be dropped off at the Marina office.

Beach Bin Trial

The City has been working closely with the Port Coogee Community Association and Coogee Beach Progress Association to address litter along the coastline. One outcome of this work was to trial bins on the beach, from Coogee Beach Surf Lifesaving Club to the south and the Omeo Shipwreck to the north, from December 2019 - February 2020.

The results of the trial are currently being considered.

Fish Diversity Study

Between December 2018 and December 2019 the marina engaged Aqua Research and Monitoring Services to gather data in the marina, including sea temperature monitoring and marine habitat mapping, however focusing on fish diversity.

The report identified a total of 85 finfish species from 47 families as well as other fish species, including dolphins, sea stars, mussels and nudibranchs. The report identified eight different families of hard corals growing inside the marina, which will be monitored for future health and growth.
