In January 2019, the City installed WA’s first Seabin at the Port Coogee Marina (northern corner, close to Dome Café) to capture litter from the local waterways. The Seabin is a floating rubbish bin designed to be installed on floating platforms in marinas, yacht clubs and calm waterways. We have named him Bob due to the motion he makes to collect rubbish from our waterways.
Seabins can catch an estimated 1.5kg of rubbish per day, and some of the items collected in Bob since installation are straws, cigarette butts, a plastic tomato, rope, plastic pieces and many micro and macro plastics that are only 2mm in size. Bob also collects detergents, fuels and oils with a hydrocarbon filter in his catch bag.
