Eco Shark Barrier condition

The City of Cockburn's response to Nine News about the condition of the Eco Shark Barrier at Coogee Beach, 15.9.20 -

Question: We are now reaching out to other local councils to see if you have had any similar issues with your shark barrier?

Answer: We have not had any issues with our barrier. Regular inspections are undertaken by the contractor (weather permitting) and any required repairs undertaken immediately.

Question: And will your structure now be reviewed, following the issues at Sorrento?

Answer: We have no reason at this time to review our barrier or contract.
Eco Shark Barriers is already scheduled to complete routine inspection and maintenance of the Coogee barrier from tomorrow when this hole is likely to be repaired immediately or as soon as possible after that time.

Holes or damage to the City’s Eco Shark Barrier occur from time to time, particularly during winter storms and weather patterns, and maintenance is an ongoing process. This is to be expected for a flexible structure in a harsh, dynamic marine environment.

Barrier damage is either identified by Eco Shark Barriers through routine inspections, or otherwise reported to the City by swimmers using the barrier. Either way, minor damage is rectified as promptly as practical, or signage is displayed to notify swimmers that the barrier is under repair until it is fixed if it can’t be repaired immediately.

Inspections are undertaken by Eco Shark Barrier periodically as appropriate to weather conditions.
