Get Planting Cockburn events planned for June and July

If you are keen to leave your green thumbprint on the City of Cockburn, sign up to get your hands dirty at our new Get Planting Cockburn program.

The first of several community Get Planting Cockburn events for 2018-19 will be held at C.Y. O’Connor Reserve on Saturday, 23 June, 9am-1pm, including a barbecue lunch.

This will be followed by tube stock planting along the coast near Coogee Beach Surf Life Saving Club at Poore Grove 9am-2pm on 25 June.

Sustainability Officer Jennifer Harrison said the Get Planting Cockburn events would involve planting 600 trees and 3,500 shrubs along coastal walking and cycling tracks between North Coogee and Woodman Point.

“These trees and shrubs will provide shade to Cockburn Coast trail users in the future and improve habitat values within Coogee Beach and C.Y. O’Connor reserves,” Jennifer said.

Some of the species that will be planted include Rottnest Island Pine, Tuarts, Peppermint trees and Wattles.

More community planting will take place at Bibra Lake on 7 July 9am-1pm with a barbecue lunch.

This event will establish 500 foraging tree species, along with additional native tube stock, at a Native Bird Oasis.

This will improve a degraded 8,000sqm Banksia woodland site on the eastern side of Bibra Lake. Planting will be held 9am-1pm, including a barbecue.

This long-term project will utilise funds from the City, Impact 100 and the State Government’s Natural Resource Management program, plus Get Planting Cockburn grants.

Eventually 15,000 tube stock species will be planted at the Native Bird Oasis in a project with BirdLife WA to provide habitat for threatened cockatoos and other native birdlife.

Get Planting Cockburn has been made possible with a $100,000 grant from the Local Projects Local Jobs fund administered by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

The project will activate people of all ages to add more than 7,000 extra trees and shrubs to the Cockburn landscape until 2020, over and above the five hectares already earmarked for planting in the City in 2018.

Bookings for these events are essential here.
