From the creators of the internationally acclaimed Garage Sale Trail comes a new community initiative to encourage more people to grow, share and eat locally grown foods. Grow It Local - Your Local Grow Community is a celebration of backyard, balcony, community and window-sill farmers.
The City of Cockburn is the first WA council to jump on board and support the program. Local growers are invited to ‘put their patch on the map’ at growitlocal.com and get involved, which means giving your patch a name, outlining what’s growing and highlighting whether you’re interested in connecting with other local growers to share or sell your produce, knowledge, space or skills. Likewise, aspiring growers can log on, see what’s growing locally and get inspired to get growing too.
The initiative is launching with the Grow It Local Festival, a community-powered idea from 4-10 November 2019 in and around Cockburn. The festival has a knowledge and skill sharing theme and invites edible gardening and local food loving Australians to host and attend workshops, events, and tutorials. Local residents can get involved by attending or hosting a free or ticketed event. Think backyard passata classes with a third generation Italian, permaculture principles, an introduction to growing workshop, composting 101, pickling masterclass, urban chicken farming, backyard beekeeping and more. Log on, get involved and curate your own contribution at growitlocal.com.
