State of Sustainability Report

The City took another step on its sustainability journey with the adoption of its inaugural State of Sustainability (SoS) report on 8 December 2011. The SoS is a first for local government in WA and demonstrates Cockburn's commitment to sustainability and its pursuit of governance excellence.

Residential Building Design

The City has  developed a Building a Sustainable House in the City of Cockburn Brochure.

It is designed to encourage new lot owners within Cockburn to consider the principles of sustainable design in the construction of their home. This is particularly important as it is estimated that Australia's 7 million households produce over 105 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually. Emissions from this sector contribute to over 20% of Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions.

Dry cell battery recycling program

Household batteries present an environmental hazard in our waste stream, Dry Cell Battery Bin exposing our soils and waterways to heavy metal contamination, including lead and acid, having the potential to leach from solid waste landfills.

Thanks to a metropolitan wide recycling initiative, residents in the City of Cockburn can now drop off their old household batteries at one of the five locations in the City. For more information on the types of batteries you can recycle and locations in the City of Cockburn, click here

To further reduce the environmental impact of household batteries, make a commitment to purchasing rechargeable varieties.
