Councillors are elected for four year terms. Local Government elections are normally held in the third weekend of October every second year.
At the City of Cockburn , the position of Mayor is popularly elected by the Ratepayers for a 4 year term. The current Mayor has been elected until October 2009.

The City of Cockburn has three wards; East, Central & West Wards. Each Ward is represented by three councillors and which consists of several suburbs. Wards are primarily in place to ensure voting is made easier and is a similar set up to State and Federal voting areas.
It also clearly identifies to Ratepayers, the Councillors that they can contact for information or assistance regarding their area.
City of Cockburn's Ward boundaries are made up of the following suburbs:
